Nykøbing Falster has a population of 19,000 and is thus the largest town in the region, with plenty going on. Here you could visit Nykøbing Falster Zoo, go shopping in the interesting shops and enjoy cultural experiences such as the theatre and concerts.
The town’s water tower offers a vantage point overlooking the entire town, with views across the sound and to the Medieval Centre on the other side, where you can feel and smell the Middle Ages.
If you’re more interested in some peace and quiet, the two little towns of Nysted and Stubbekøbing are well worth a visit. With its old houses, Nysted offers beauty and charm, and here you can visit “Vindens Verden” (“world of wind”), a knowledge centre about the Nysted offshore wind farm.
In Stubbekøbing, you could visit the largest motorcycle and radio museum in Northern Europe, and enjoy the lovely scenery along the coast towards Hesnæs. Hesnæs is a little fishing hamlet, famous for its houses faced with rushes and reeds, and its idyllic setting.
The scenery of the region is characterised by a rich cultural heritage, with lots of ancient monuments and historic sites. You might like to explore the grave mounds and dolmens in Frejlev Skov woods and Halskov Vænge. Bring your walking shoes and go for a walk in the unique conservation area near Skejten, where the oak trees stand tall and majestic in a marshy area. This is also a good base for a trip to Fuglsang park – the beautifully landscaped gardens of Fuglsang manor house. Beside the manor house is Fuglsang Kunstmuseum (art museum) with its changing exhibitions. If you want to see more art, there are plenty of galleries and artisans at work in the area.
Marielyst offers a number of different activities such as golf, a diving centre and Go-karts, as well as a superb bathing beach that extends all the way down to Gedser, the most southerly tip of Denmark. Marielyst is a real summer town, with lots of exciting things to see and do throughout the summer.
